Anaheim and Orange County continue to see rising cases as the omicron BA.2 subvariant drives new infections.
BA.2, a more catchy version of omicron, makes up more than 90 percent of cases in Orange County.
The trend began on April 1 and so far is bringing steady increases in weekly cases while hospitalizations remain low.
For the seven days through May 17, Anaheim saw 404 new cases, up from 393 a week earlier. That was part of 3,810 Orange County cases for the week, up from 3,109 a week earlier.
Vaccines and boosters remain our best tool to move beyond the coronavirus pandemic, just as widespread vaccination has helped us move past polio, measles and many other preventable diseases.

The city is at a cumulative 81,169 past, active and recovered cases since reporting by city began in March 2020, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.
Anaheim has seen 13,045 cases among children, with 57 reported in the past week.
There were no Anaheim deaths recorded in the past week.
Anaheim has seen 1,182 people pass from complications of COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus.

Orange County Cases
We report Anaheim and Orange County case data Tuesdays and vaccine data weekly or whenever available.
As of May 17, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the lead agency for coronavirus in our region, is tracking 561,148 cases, with 3,810 new cases reported for the past seven days, up from 3,109 the week prior.
Orange County is seeing a continued rise in weekly cases as the omicron BA.2 subvariant drives new infections. Orange County Health Care Agency has also identified cases caused by the omicron BA.4 subvariant.
The uptick began on April 1 and so far is bringing steady increases in weekly cases.
The seven-day average of new cases reported as of May 8 is 473. The number, which lags by two weeks, has ticked up since its recent low of 106 on March 19.
We are cautiously watching the trend with BA.2 estimated to make up 90 percent of new cases locally.
Among cases, there are 6,280 reported in skilled nursing facilities, 3,360 cases among jail inmates and 1,753 among the county’s homeless population.
The county’s estimate of those who have recovered from COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus, is at 543,397 people, or 97 percent.
There were four deaths recorded in the past week, down from 10 the week prior.
Deaths recorded on any given day occurred over several days, sometimes even weeks or months.
Orange County has seen 7,023 deaths — the first of which was recorded March 24, 2020 — from complications of COVID-19.
The county saw 99,305 polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests recorded for the seven days through May 17.
A PCR test is a swab sample that confirms if a person has a current infection.
The county has processed 8,973,525 PCR tests as of May 17.

As of data reported May 17, the county's current reported case rate is 10 per 100,000, up from 7.5 per 100,000 a week earlier.
