In this presentation, Dr. Maythee Rojas, Professor of Chicano and Latino Studies at California State University, Long Beach, highlights the impact that the dictatorship had on women and how the Mirabal sisters emerged as leading figures in the country’s political activism even as it ultimately resulted in their demise. Drawing on visual imagery, storytelling, and recent scholarship, Dr. Rojas illustrates how Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, richly traces the Mirabal sisters’ bravery and determination to see their country set free.
