The 5th annual Orange County Zine Fest is hosted at Anaheim Central Library on Saturday, August 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A “zine” (short for “magazine”) is any kind of booklet or printed media that is self-published and sold independently. The content can range from the most obscure subcultural topics to massively trending contemporary social issues--and everything in between! “Zine Fests” are truly where makers and their communities collide. Attendees may browse, read and purchase materials directly from vendors.
This year’s event will feature over 100 vendors, series of panel discussions, including one on local writers, moderated by Sarah Rafael García from Barrio Writers and LibroMobile, workshops and a food pop-up. At the close of the event, speaker Stacy Russo, a librarian, and professor from Santa Ana College, will discuss the power of personal stories and self-publishing.
If you can’t make it to the event, no fear! There’s one place where you can flip through zines and take them home without having to wait for a zine fest, and all you need is a library card. Anaheim Public Library is the first public library in Orange County to provide a circulating zine collection. As creators find new ways of sharing stories and ideas through zines, our zine collection will grow alongside those voices of the Anaheim community.
