According to ProLiteracy.org, more than 36 million adults living in the US cannot read, write or do basic math above the third grade level. As a result, many adults find themselves struggling with daily activities or common work-related tasks. Parents also face the difficulty of not being able to help when their children have questions about homework, which can stifle their child’s progress towards academic success. Underdeveloped literacy has long-lasting effects, such as increasing the chances of one living in poverty or not being able to find employment. Declining adult literacy has become a major problem in the United States and will only continue to worsen if improvement is not actively pursued on a daily basis.
OC Reads and the Anaheim Public Library are relaunching their long-standing partnership this month to reinvigorate adult literacy throughout Anaheim. The OC Reads program is twofold in its design to foster literacy. First, it seeks to pair experienced volunteer tutors with adults who already have a basic command of the language but need assistance with reading and writing. Second, other adults of the Anaheim community who are willing to give back to their community can extend their help directly to learners in the program. The Adult Literacy program is completely free and confidential. There are many eager learners currently waiting to be paired with adult literacy tutors, and learning is better together—so start your literacy journey today!
