ANAHEIM, CALIF (April 4, 2019) – A male adult suspect was shot and killed by SWAT officers during a barricade in Anaheim this morning. The decedent has been identified as Daniel Robert Ramirez III, a 30 year old resident of Anaheim. Around 9:00 am Thursday morning, APD was called to the 500 block of N. Harcourt Street to assist detectives from the Irvine Police Department who were serving a search warrant at a residence at that location. During a search of the detached garage, Irvine detectives found a loaded rifle and heard noises coming from the attic.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, the APD Tactical Response Group (SWAT) was activated. During the search of the garage, SWAT officers contacted two male suspects who had barricaded themselves in the garage attic. The suspects were uncooperative and refused to come down. After extensive communication with officers, as well as deploying chemical munitions (tear gas), one male suspect came down from the attic. He was uncooperative and was taken into custody after deploying less than lethal techniques.
A second male suspect remained barricaded in the attic and made verbal statements he would shoot officers. Ultimately an Officer Involved Shooting occurred. SWAT Paramedics from Anaheim Fire & Rescue were on scene and immediately provided life-saving efforts, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As per protocol, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will lead the investigation with the assistance of the APD Homicide Detail. Concurrent investigations by the APD Major Incident ReviewTeam (MIRT) and the Office of Independent Review (OIR) are underway. The involved APD personnel were equipped with Body Worn Cameras and the cameras were activated at the time of theshooting.
Two suspects were arrested by Irvine PD, including one of the males from the attic. Both of those suspects have been identified as having absconded from parole. The underlying crimes and charges against the suspects are being handled by Irvine PD.
