ANAHEIM, Calif. (July 16, 2019) — Anaheim’s City Council voted Tuesday to name Mayor Harry Sidhu as its representative on the city’s negotiating team working toward a new agreement with Angels Baseball.

The negotiating team includes City Manager Chris Zapata and City Attorney Rob Fabela with support from city executive staff and consultants.

“For the past few months, both Anaheim and the Angels have been gathering facts and studying the opportunity that exists around the stadium,” Sidhu said. “In coming weeks, we will need to come together to determine next steps and a path forward.”

Sidhu, who met with Angels owner Arte Moreno in January about renewing talks and has made securing baseball’s future in Anaheim a priority, will serve as the Council’s exclusive representative during negotiations.

The entire Council will continue to receive briefings and updates from the city manager. Any proposed agreement would come before the Council for public discussion and approval.

The city of Anaheim is in the early stages of looking at a new long-term lease for Angels Baseball at the site of city-owned Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

While there are no specifics at this point, a new lease agreement could be part of Anaheim’s vision for the Platinum Triangle, the 820-acre area around the stadium and Honda Center.

The Platinum Triangle is evolving into an exciting place with urban-style homes, restaurants, shops and offices with potential for a lot more.

An appraisal commissioned by the city for land around the stadium is due this month. It will be part of talks about potential development and would be shared once any potential agreement is considered by the Council.

The Angels have been evaluating development opportunities around the stadium with a team led by Newport Beach-based Brooks Street and that also includes architectural, engineering and financial advisory firms.
