ANAHEIM, CA - (May 14, 2008) - The recipients of the Third Annual Anaheim Mayor’s TechScholar program were recognized by Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle and City Council members yesterday in a ceremony at the Downtown Community Center. The 2008 program awarded a record-number 49 Anaheim high school students with free laptops, laptop backpacks and up to two years of free wireless internet service.
Created in 2006 by Pringle, the Mayor’s TechScholar Program is open to any college-bound high school sophomore or junior who lives in Anaheim. Mayor’s TechScholars recipients are chosen based on merit and need. The Mayor’s TechScholar program is sponsored by AT&T, Time Warner Cable, Anaheim Public Utilities, Anaheim Ducks, Makar and Enterasys.
“This program was created to assist students in achieving their academic goals,” said Mayor Pringle. “To date, we have awarded more than 100 laptops with free internet service to deserving, college-bound Anaheim high school students. It is such a great feeling to know that these students will have an increased chance of success in their future endeavors.”
Judges for the Third Annual Mayor’s TechScholar Program included Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, Anaheim City Councilwoman Lorri Galloway, U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford, Anaheim Public Utilities General Manager Marcie Edwards, Executive Director for AT&T External Affairs Richard Porras and Time Warner Cable Vice President of Community and Government Affairs Kristy Hennessey.
