ANAHEIM, CA - (June 11, 2008) - The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented the City of Anaheim with a Brownfields Assessment Grant in the amount of $200,000. Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle accepted the check on the City’s behalf at a ceremony on Tuesday, June 10, at Ross Park. This Brownfields Assessment Grant will allow the City to assess land adjacent to Ross Park, formerly occupied by the Home Oil Company.
“We are very excited to be working with EPA in order to make this new site part of our park expansion project. This is a great opportunity to expand our resources and allow our community to enjoy more space for leisure activities,” said Mayor Pringle.
The City’s plans are to expand the park from its current 5.5 acres to 9 acres. Ross Park, which opened in 2003, is a popular city park with areas used for baseball, basketball, soccer and softball.
In the 1920’s the Home Oil Company established a gas, oil and agricultural supply distribution business on the site. Operation ceased on the site in 2000, and the land was subsequently purchased by the City of Anaheim.
The Brownfields Assessment Grant provided by EPA will not only be used to assess the site from a historical perspective, but will also determine the best way to clean up the location to allow for public park use. The site assessment activities will be completed within the next 12-18 months. City staff is currently working with Anaheim residents to identify ways in which the park will best serve the community’s needs as well as reflect its historic significance.
