U.s. Men’s Volleyball Team Departs For 2008 Olympic Games; Media Day And Community Send-off At Anaheim’s Espn Zone On July 29.
ANAHEIM, CA - (July 24, 2008) - Members of the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball team, soon to depart for the 2008 Olympic Games, will be available for the media and a community send-off on Tuesday, July 29 at Anaheim’s ESPN Zone. The team, ranked third in the world and currently playing in the FIVB World League final round in Brazil, travels to Beijing, China later that week.

Media are invited to attend. Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, City Council members and City leaders will also be at ESPN Zone for the send-off. The team will be acknowledged during a brief ceremony, scheduled to take place at 3:00 p.m. in front of the restaurant.

The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball team trains in Anaheim, having moved from Colorado Springs, Colo. in 2006. Their training center is at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim.

Beginnings and International Scope of Volleyball

 

·         On an international level Volleyball ranks second behind soccer among participation sports.  Worldwide, 800 million individuals play Volleyball at least once a week, 46 million of those being Americans.

·         The sport of Volleyball is more than 100 years old, invented in 1894 by William Morgan, a YMCA instructor from Holyoke, Massachusetts. 

·         The YMCA introduced Volleyball to the countries of Canada, Asia, the Southern Hemisphere, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Brazil, the Philippines – all before 1916. 

·         The International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted Volleyball as an official team sport in 1957, and was introduced at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
