| ANAHEIM, CA - (August 5, 2008) - Trading their laptops and ledgers for rakes and shovels, 1,000 college honor students will volunteer at Anaheim’s Burris Basin on Thursday, Aug. 7 and work alongside the City of Anaheim’s Community Services department in preparing the site for community recreational use.
The 1,000 honor students are members of the accounting honor society Beta Alpha Psi, in Anaheim for their annual meeting. The students will gather at the Anaheim Marriott hotel at 11:30 a.m. to be greeted by Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, who will deliver remarks of appreciation and the value of community service. The students will then board their buses, and travel to Burris Basin, an area which will serve Anaheim residents as Anaheim Coves. There, the students will spend three hours (12:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) in this large scale community service project.
“All of us with the City of Anaheim appreciate the students’ willingness to volunteer in our community,” said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. “This project is an example of volunteers working with local government to create new opportunities for residents and visitors. This renewal of the recreational area is one of the initial steps in the beautification of Anaheim Coves, formerly known as the Burris Basin.”
Beta Alpha Psi’s annual meeting incorporates community service involvement for the students. This community service project is sponsored by international accounting firm KPMG. The City of Anaheim recently received a generous grant in the amount of $2.5 million dollars from the State of California Resources Agency for the purpose to create public access on nearly two miles of the Burris Basin Trail. The grant specifically calls for landscape improvements, adding trail amenities, such as two nature observation decks, benches, a split rail fence, litter receptacles, and the installation of a parking area with a restroom facility. The California River Parkways Program, a competitive grant program administered by the Secretary for Resources, awards funds to public agencies and non-profit organizations to develop river parkways in their communities.
