| ANAHEIM, CA - (May 15, 2009) - The City of Anaheim was honored Tuesday by the Urban Land Institute Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing with the Models of Excellence Award. The award was presented to Anaheim for its development of The Boulevard, a pedestrian-friendly affordable residential community in downtown Anaheim. Anaheim was one of three cities this year to receive the Models of Excellence Award. Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Bob Hernandez accepted the award on the City’s behalf.
The Boulevard, located on Anaheim Blvd. and Santa Ana St. in the historic Anaheim Colony District, features 56 homes, 36 of which are affordable. The Anaheim Redevelopment Agency entered into a public-private partnership with John Laing Homes to develop the site. The public-private partnership enabled close collaboration on all facets of the development including site design, entitlement processing, environmental cleanup, construction, marketing, and sales. The Boulevard was completed in 2005.
The Boulevard enhances the character of the surrounding historic district. It was the first housing development to be built under the City’s overlay zone development standards, and has served as a catalyst for future downtown residential development. In addition to ensuring affordability at very-low, low, and moderate income levels the City also has a live/work preference which provides opportunities for persons who live and/or work in Anaheim.
