|Anaheim Citizen Corps Council Named as National Award Finalist|
ANAHEIM, CA - (August 12, 2010) - The Anaheim Citizen Corps Council has been named a finalist for a national award - the 2010 National Citizen Corps Achievement Awards, Celebrating Resilient Communities - by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Anaheim Citizen Corps Council, a grassroots movement of six volunteer programs, actively engages civic leaders and the public in community safety and disaster preparedness.
The Anaheim Citizen Corps Council, nominated for the Volunteer Integration Award, is made up of six groups, all of which are dedicated to ensuring their community is prepared and safe during emergencies. The groups are the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES), Fire Corps, Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS), Neighborhood Watch, and volunteers from the City’s Community Services Department. The Anaheim Citizen Corps Council’s readiness is vital to first responders during emergencies.
"The City of Anaheim is proud of the hard work and achievements of the members of the Anaheim Citizen Corps Council," said City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. "The volunteers exemplify excellence in community emergency planning, and their public service should be a model for other communities."
Award winners will be announced in September as part of National Preparedness Month (NPM). Led by FEMA’s Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps, NPM is held in September to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their home, businesses and communities. The program is administered by FEMA and implemented locally.
