Anaheim Building Gets Gold By Going Green
ANAHEIM, CA - (December 16, 2010) - Anaheim Public Utilities is proud to announce that the renovations to their headquarters, Anaheim West Tower, have been awarded with gold-level LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design) certification status. The building, which remained occupied during its refurbishment from early 2007 until mid-2009, offered the utility a unique chance to integrate elements of green building and energy efficiency.

Anaheim West Tower was scheduled for renovation in late 2006 when the Utility took this opportunity to turn a routine project into something more. The installation of a variety of green products and practices transformed this government building into a model for the entire community – and the initial investment to integrate these sustainable building techniques will save the City money, by using less resources.

The efforts began in early 2007 with the construction process itself: recycled materials, low-emitting adhesives and paint, along with wood from providers that participate in sustainable forestry practices, were used predominantly throughout the refurbishment, and more than 90% of the waste generated by the construction was diverted away from landfills. Several new energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly features were integrated into the building, such as optimized lighting, Energy Star appliances, and water saving plumbing retrofits. Finally, several new procedures were drawn up to support ongoing green practices, such as green power purchasing, collection of recyclables, and green facility maintenance and cleaning practices.

As part of the refurbishment process, the City contracted with the architectural firm of Robert Borders & Associates to assist with the construction specifications and project management needed to insure compliance with the LEED certification requirements and process. The winning low bidder, local Anaheim contractor Great West Contractors, Inc., provided construction experience and a LEED Accredited Professional during the project, verifying through the U.S. Green Building Council’s on-line system that the appropriate materials were used each step of the way. The project was completed in late 2009 and was awarded gold-level LEED status in 2010.

The LEED rating system is a U.S. Green Building Council standard, which was designed to help define, support and certify successful energy-efficient and environmentally-conscious building design, construction and operations. LEED is transforming the marketplace by providing a nationally recognized certification system to promote integrated, whole-building design practices in the building industry.

For existing commercial interiors, LEED is a 57-point system. To merely qualify as LEED-certified, a building must earn a minimum of 21 points, and to achieve gold certification, like Anaheim West Tower, a building must earn a minimum of 32 points. To learn more about Green Building and the LEED certification process, visit www.anaheim.net/utilities, and click on Green Connection.
