ANAHEIM, CA - (June 28, 2011) - The City of Anaheim will honor the centennial birthday of President Ronald Reagan at a special ceremony and park dedication on Friday, July 1 at 10 a.m. Michael Reagan, son of President Reagan and president and founder of The Reagan Legacy Foundation, will serve as the special guest speaker, with radio talk show host and former Reagan staff member Hugh Hewitt as emcee.
“We are honored to dedicate one of Anaheim’s most visited parks in recognition of Ronald Reagan," said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. "President Reagan's love of liberty and belief in America made our nation a better place. I’m proud that the legacy of this great American will be long cherished and remembered in Anaheim for years to come."
President Reagan served two terms as this nation’s 40th president (1981-89), and two terms as the 33rd governor of California (1967-75). He also visited Anaheim on several occasions, most notably when he launched his campaign for governor at the home of a local Anaheim resident.
Reagan made many forays into Anaheim over the years. As a local broadcaster and Hollywood actor, Reagan joined Walt Disney for the opening of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. As California Governor, Reagan visited Anaheim Stadium to throw out the first pitch (1967), visited with the Anaheim city officials while participating at GOP fund-raising dinners at the Anaheim Convention Center (1969 and 1970), and also visited Loara High School, briefly joining football practice before addressing the student body (1970). President Reagan also attended the 1989 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, held at Anaheim Stadium.
Michael Reagan, founder of The Reagan Legacy Foundation, is one of President Reagan’s four children. The Reagan Legacy Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization which seeks to honor the President’s dedication to individual liberty and democracy. The Foundation encourages future leaders in its support of educational and student exchange efforts, as well as offers opportunities to learn about the President’s commitment to freedom through research projects and exhibits.
Hugh Hewitt is a lawyer, law professor and broadcast journalist whose nationally syndicated radio show is heard in more than 120 cities across the United States. He served for nearly six years in the Reagan Administration in a variety of posts, including Assistant Counsel in the White House and Special Assistant to two Attorneys General. Hewitt is best known as the host of his radio show, which has an audience estimated at more than 2 million listeners every week.
Ronald Reagan Park, formerly Toyon Park, is located at 945 S. Weir Canyon Road. Media and the public are invited to attend this special ceremony.
