| Anaheim Police Department Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs at Kaiser Permanente Anaheim Medical Center, Saturday, September 29 | ||||||||||||
|
ANAHEIM, CA - (September 26, 2012) - Saturday, September 29 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and the Anaheim Police Department, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente Orange County, the Orange County Sanitation District, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will give local residents an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potential dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. From 10am-2pm, bring your medications for disposal to the following Kaiser Permanente Orange County drive-through, drop-off location;
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-both pose potential health hazards. For more information on how to safely dispose of medications properly, please visit the Orange County Sanitation District’s “What 2 Flush” campaign at www.ocsd.com or www.nodrugsdownthedrain.org.
