|ANAHEIM CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON ELECTIONS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT TO HOLD MEETING ON DECEMBER 13|
ANAHEIM, CA - (December 10, 2012) -
The Anaheim Citizens Advisory Committee on Elections and Community Involvement (CAC) invites the community to attend its next scheduled meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13, which will offer a presentation on the California Voting Rights Act from Justin Levitt, Associate Professor of Law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
The meeting will take place at Trident Education Center (at Gilbert High School, 1800 W. Ball Road, Anaheim, CA 92804), starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting agenda and related items are posted online at www.anaheim.net/CACElections.
In addition to the California Voting Rights presentation, committee members previously requested the opportunity to learn about similar citizen commissions on electoral systems created by other cities. At the December 13 meeting, the CAC will hear from Wayne Dernetz from the City of Vista and George Petrulakis from the City of Modesto regarding their experiences with citizens commissions on elections.
The purpose of the CAC is to promote the full participation of all residents, neighborhoods, community groups and ethnic groups relating to the City’s electoral system. The CAC, scheduled to meet on a monthly basis at locations throughout the City, will report its findings and recommendations directly to the City Council by May 31, 2013, including recommendations on:
· Potential changes in the City’s election systems, including election by district;
· How to encourage voter registration;
· How to identify and engage community groups in elections and in local government decision making;
· Language assistance programs; and
· Other techniques to promote full participation in the electoral process.
Any proposed changes to the City’s governance structure may be placed on the June 2014 ballot to ensure that any organizational changes are effective by the next regular general municipal election in November 2014, if so desired by the electorate of Anaheim.
CAC meetings will include a time for public comments, and will be recorded and available for viewing online at www.anaheim.net/CACelections and on the City of Anaheim local access channel, ACTV Channel 3. Future meeting information will be posted online at www.anaheim.net/CACElections.
The City has also set up an email subscription system by which any resident can receive updates to the CAC, including future meeting agendas, or any other city-related topics. Please click here to customize your free email subscription to any of a number of city news and information subjects.
The 11-member CAC was established on Aug. 10, and appointments were announced on September 25 and posted on the CAC webpage at www.anaheim.net/CACelections. A list of committee members can be found by clicking here.
