ANAHEIM, CA - (March 5, 2013) - Commuters driving past the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) site on Katella Ave. in the Platinum Triangle are witnessing a flurry of construction activity.
Trucks, cranes, lifts, bulldozers, excavators, scrapers and loaders are making progress on the 16-acre site within the shadows of Angel Stadium of Anaheim and Honda Center. It’s clear to see that the ARTIC construction project which began in the fall is moving full speed ahead as crews continue work on many fronts. To date, the project site has been cleared and the building foundation preparation completed. Crews recently completed deep dynamic compaction to stabilize the soil and the utility undergrounding is underway with 80% of underground utility work expected to be completed within the next 30 days. Demolition work has proceeded on the existing Douglass Road Bridge retaining walls to make room for the additional abutments which will support the rail platforms. Work has also begun on the pedestrian concourse bridge cast-in-place piles that will support the bridge support columns. The pedestrian concourse bridge will connect the terminal building with the rail platforms where passengers board trains. Interested in viewing the progress? Cameras are tracking the construction, with images from the same vantage point uploaded every 15 minutes, thanks to ARTIC construction contractor Clark Construction. ARTIC will provide service to Anaheim and Orange County’s more than 40 million annual visitors, as well as Orange County’s three million residents, and will house 10 different transportation modes when it opens, including Metrolink, Amtrak, OCTA bus service, taxi, bicycle, international buses and tour and charter buses. ARTIC is also planned for future modes of transportation services, as well as retail, restaurant and office space, making it a multi-purpose civic space. ARTIC’s three-level terminal building is designed for LEED Platinum certification. The steel framing, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) roof system (the same material as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Water Cube Aquatics Center) and glass cladding will provide for maximum energy efficiency. The state-of-the-art design of ARTIC has resulted in numerous awards including the recent Honor Award by AIA Orange County at the 2012 Design Awards. The Design Awards honored excellence in work by architects. ARTIC was designed by the team of PB/HOK. ARTIC will encompass 67,000 square foot and stand 110 feet tall, truly making the structure an iconic landmark. Upon completion in late 2014, ARTIC users will enjoy efficiency and convenience in their commuting and travels. For more information about ARTIC, please visit www.ARTICinfo.com.
