| ANAHEIM, CA - (August 17, 1999) - The Anaheim Public welcomes students of all ages to its five libraries and the Bookmobile, where school support materials and services are waiting. Homework will definitely be made easier for students who use the new Alphasmart word processing keyboards available at the Central and Sunkist libraries. Funded by a grant from the State of California to the Anaheim City School District, these keyboards allow students to practice their keyboard skills and do simple word processing without the expense of a home computer. The keyboards are linked to a computer and a printer, which will allow the students to produce clear and readable reports. With spell check built into the computer, the reports are guaranteed to please both student and teacher. As part of the grant, student interns from San Jose State Library School will be presenting Technology Nights in the Library later this year. Searching for that little known fact or for information about Indian tribes, the California Missions or science projects will be much easier this year with the availability of Internet searching at all five libraries. Students under 18 must have parental consent unless using the Library Channel, which provides direct connection to homework related sites for children. The Library Channel is open to all users from the third grade and older. Students younger than third grade must have an adult with them to assist and guide their searching. The Homework Help Center at the Haskett Library (2650 Broadway) is available for students after school on Mondays and Wednesdays. Both PC and Mac applications for school support are provided, including grammar and phonic, math, spelling and geography programs. Additional homework centers will open in the other libraries over the next few months. All libraries are in need of Teen Volunteers to assist in working with the younger children. If you are interest in this unique volunteer activity, please calll the Central Library at 714-765-1880 and ask to speak with Tasneem Ghazali, Young Adult Librarian. Homework help may be as close as your home PC. With Dial Pac, you can access the Library’s catalog and many of its specialized resources, including full-text magazines and health and medical sources. Once in the catalog, you can place a reserve on needed books without visiting or calling the Library. All you need is your Anaheim Public Library card.
