Anaheim Charter Review Committee Meetings Continue
Community is encouraged to attend and participate
ANAHEIM, CA - (October 14, 2013) - Anaheim residents and community members are encouraged to attend the next Charter Review Committee meeting, scheduled to take place on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Anaheim City Hall’s Council Chambers (200 S. Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim, CA 92805) at 6 p.m.

The Anaheim City Council approved the creation of the Charter Review Committee on May 28 to serve as an advisory body to the Council to conduct a thorough review of the Charter. Since its inception, six community meetings have been held to date, and the upcoming topics for discussion are:

The Charter Review Committee has plans to prepare a Recommendations Report at the end of the year for City Council’s consideration. Any change to the City’s Charter can be made only by the vote of Anaheim’s residents. If members of the community are unable to attend, comments can be provided online from the City’s Charter Review web page, or submitted in writing to the Anaheim City Clerk’s Office.

The Anaheim City Charter, the City’s fundamental governing document, outlines certain authorities and restrictions the City has over municipal affairs. It was adopted in 1964 and approved in 1965, thereby establishing Anaheim as a Charter City in the State of California. City charters are often referred to as a city's "constitution" and can function both to expand local city control over municipal affairs, as well as limit a charter city's power. Since adoption of the charter, the City of Anaheim has conducted four charter reviews, approximately one every 10 years, and during that time 27 amendments have been adopted. The most recent charter review took place in 1999.
