|ANAHEIM AND LOS ANGELES MAYORS AGREE TO FRIENDLY WAGER AS NHL DUCKS AND KINGS GO HEAD TO HEAD IN PLAYOFFS|
ANAHEIM, CA - (May 2, 2014) - Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti agreed to a friendly wager -- an exchange of community service projects -- as the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings begin the best of seven series in the Second Round of the NHL Western Conference Playoffs tomorrow in Anaheim. This is the first time the two teams will face each other in a playoff scenario.
If the Ducks win the series, Mayor Garcetti will join Mayor Tait in visiting Anaheim’s Guinn Elementary School and offer a lesson in music and music appreciation.
If the Kings win the series, Mayor Tait will join Mayor Garcetti for a L.A. River Clean Up day.
"Here in Anaheim, we love our Ducks, and I look forward to cheering them on all the way to Stanley Cup finals," said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. "Upon conclusion of this Second Round series, I will personally welcome Mayor Garcetti to Anaheim. As an accomplished musician, Mayor Garcetti will offer our young residents a wonderful lesson in the value of music and the arts."
"The Los Angeles Kings made history this week and became the hottest team in the N.H.L., just another reason that L.A. is the best sports town in America," said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. "After the Kings advance to the conference finals, I will welcome Mayor Tait to join me for a project to clean up the L.A. River and help it become a lifeblood for the next chapter in our City."
The Anaheim City School District, of which Guinn Elementary is a part, is introducing music back into public schools. Used instruments are being donated by local residents and given new life thanks to students eager to learn how to play. The Orange County Symphony has partnered with the Anaheim City School District to offer the 14 schools in the District music lessons, with Symphony members acting as part-time music teachers. Donations are also being accepted at www.acsdorchestraprogram.com.
In addition, the Anaheim City School District recently celebrated one million acts of kindness as demonstrated by their students. Students were challenged to demonstrate acts of kindness in their schools, and not only did the students accept the challenge, they exceeded expectations. In fact, a local principal commented visits to his office decreased significantly as a result of the acts of kindness. Friends of the Los Angeles River is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization whose mission for the past 25 years has been and remains to protect and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Los Angeles River and its riparian habitat through inclusive planning, education, and wise stewardship. FoLAR’s goal is a swimmable, fishable, boatable Los Angeles River bordered by a greenway from the mountains to the sea. Its annual Great L.A. River Clean-Up, held this Saturday and next, is predicted to remove 25 tons of trash that would otherwise end up in the Pacific Ocean. For more information, please visit www.folar.org.
