Gotcha Glacier World's First Indoor Surf and Ski Park to be Built in Anaheim
ANAHEIM, CA - (December 15, 1998) - The Anaheim City Council unanimously approved a lease agreement with Gotcha Glacier for the purpose of building an indoor extreme sports park at Sportstown, near Edison Field. The council also approved a land sale with Summit Commercial Properties for an office building in the stadium district.Gotcha Glacier, a $65 million state-of-the-art indoor sports entertainment complex, will occupy a site on the northern section of the parking lot adjacent to the Sun Theatre. The 435,000 sq. ft. facility will stand 150 feet tall and feature snowboarding and skiing on an upper level consisting of three-and-a-half acres of real snow highlighted by professional competition snowboard halfpipes, a terrain park, beginner and intermediate runs.

The lower level will include a wave park where surfers and body boarders can test their skills on six stationary waves that range from beginner level up to 12 feet high. Gotcha Glacier will also include the largest indoor rock climbing surface in the United States, standing 75 feet tall with 18,000 square feet of climbing space. Other amenities will include indoor sky diving, an ice skating rink, a fitness center, complimentary retail, birthday suites, two food courts, a full service restaurant and numerous other related activities centers.

"After five years of planning, we couldn’t be happier about this location and working directly with the City of Anaheim. The new site plan and sports-related tenant mix is better than ever. By bringing together an authentic, rather than virtual, sports experience—coupled with great architecture, well-planned retail, and supporting brands—Sportstown and the Gotcha Glacier will forge a world class brand of their own that will complement the entire Anaheim Resort effort," said Brad Kinney, Chairman and CEO of Gotcha Glacier.

Marvin Winkler, Chairman and CEO of Gotcha Sportswear and Glacier partner added, "The future of retail lies in the ‘Gen 2000’ or ‘Youth Quake’ population explosion. Also, Internet ‘e-tailing’ is quickly gaining in popularity. By mixing entertainment with retail and developing real community centers like Gotcha Glacier, we’ll be able to enhance the overall shopping experience for our customers."

Gotcha Glacier is also planning to build 40,000 additional square feet of retail space in the first phase and an another 60,000 sq. ft. of retail space in a second phase of development.

More than 500 people will be employed at Gotcha Glacier and its sub-lessees. The facility will be open 16 hours daily, 365 days a year and is projected to host two million visitors annually.

In addition to Gotcha Glacier, Summit Commercial Properties and Mack-Cali Realty Partners briefed City Council members on plans to build a six-story, 250,000 sq. ft. office complex adjacent to State College Blvd. north of Gene Autry Way as part of the Sportstown project. A July 1999 groundbreaking is anticipated with completion slated for September 2000.

The El Segundo-based developer has extensive experience in handling more than $1.5 billion in office, industrial, retail and multi-family properties. Summit Commercial is one of the divisions owned by Highridge Partners which has owned and sold more than $2.5 billion in real estate in the past decade.

Gotcha Glacier and Summit Commercial join the Sun Theatre on the Sportstown property. Tinseltown, which opened in November, is an interactive Academy Awards-style dinner theater owned and operated by Ogden Entertainment.

"Approval of the Gotcha Glacier and Summit Commercial agreements will be important steps in our continued efforts to create a world class destination resort in Anaheim," said City Manager James D. Ruth. "Combined with our existing facilities of Edison Field and the Pond, we are well on our way to developing an exciting business, recreation and entertainment alternative to complement ongoing efforts in the Anaheim Resort."
