ANAHEIM, CA - (May 30, 2003) - The California-Nevada Super Speed Train Commission this week approved the nomination of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle as its newest member representing California. Pringle replaces outgoing Commissioner, State Sen. Bob Margett."Because of my background I believe I can provide the Commission with a valuable perspective on this project. Since Anaheim is the Super Speed Train's westernmost terminus, it is imperative that the surrounding community have a voice as we move forward on this vitally-important project," Pringle said. Elected as Anaheim's Mayor in November of 2002, Pringle served in the California State Assembly from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1992 to1998. He was elected Speaker of the California State Assembly and presided until November 1996. Using magnetic levitation (maglev) technology, the super speed train can reach speeds of up to 300 mph, allowing passengers to travel from Las Vegas to Anaheim in about 86 minutes. When operational, the trains will alleviate traffic congestion along the busy I-15 corridor, while improving air quality and preserving economic vitality and quality of life. The California-Nevada Interstate Maglev Project offers significant advantages over all other Maglev projects currently under consideration for federal funding, in that the full 269-mile corridor will enable and illustrate: - Maximum availability and use of the Interstate 15 right-of way;
- Minimum average cost per mile (maximizing federal funding);
- Ease and predictability of construction;
- Minimum environmental issues;
- Strong ridership, revenue and economic benefits;
- Relief of a heavily congested Interstate 15 highway; and
- True intercity demonstration of Maglev technology.
Formed in 1988, the CNSSTC and its private sector partner, American Magline Group (AMG)- a consortium of technology, manufacturing, and management firms, including General Atomics, Parsons Transportation Group, Hirschfeld, Inc., and M. Neil Cummings & Associates - is charged with promoting the development of, and issuing a franchise to build, a 269-mile super speed train system connecting Las Vegas with Anaheim and other points in Southern California. (Other key private sector participants are Transrapid International, Salomon Smith Barney Inc., Booz-Allen & Hamilton, and URS Greiner Woodward Clyde.)
