Anaheim Kicks Off Community Outreach Campaign to Encourage the Anaheim Angels to "Keep the Name the Same"
ANAHEIM, CA - (December 9, 2004) - The City of Anaheim announced today that it will kick-off a community outreach campaign in an effort to convince the Anaheim Angels to "keep the name the same." This weekend the city will have booths set up at the Block at Orange and the Irvine Spectrum to have fans sign a letter to voice their opinion regarding the proposed Anaheim Angels name change.

The booths will be in front of the movie theatres at each location and will be up from 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Saturday and 11:00 am - 3:00 pm on Sunday at both locations. T-shirts with the "Keep The Name The Same" logo will be given out to the first 500 people at each location who sign the letter. "Keep The Name The Same" bumper stickers will be also available to everyone who signs the letter. A city spokesperson will be available on Saturday at the Irvine Spectrum from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm and at the Block at Orange from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

"We have received hundreds of calls and e-mails at City Hall and we've heard that the media has received literally thousands of calls objecting to a name change," said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. "People seem to be extremely passionate about making sure the Anaheim Angels don't change their name, so Anaheim is organizing this event this weekend to make sure their voices are heard. All the signatures we gather this weekend will be forwarded to the Anaheim Angels and to the Major League Baseball Commissioner's office."

The Anaheim Angels are contractually obligated to keep the city's name in its team name. Yet last year team management eliminated the name "Anaheim" from nearly everything affiliated with the Anaheim Angels. From advertising and team uniforms, right down to the media guides and even the tickets, the team name "Anaheim Angels" has simply vanished. Now the team is contemplating changing its name to the "Los Angeles Angels" and has asked Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to approve this name change.

The Anaheim Mayor and City Council have been strong proponents of the Anaheim Angels and have appreciated the improvements that current owner Arte Moreno has brought to the team. But they are adamant about making sure the team adheres to its contract with the city. "This city has invested its love and loyalty - as well as tens of millions of dollars - in the Anaheim Angels and we look forward to a successful season from our hometown team with its hometown name," said Pringle.

The Anaheim Angels had the third highest attendance in Major League Baseball last year and a vast majority of the 3.4 million fans that attended Anaheim Angel games last year were from Orange County, which has a population of more than three million residents.

"Orange County has built a strong international reputation and have been featured in film and on several television shows," said Pringle. "We are not a merely suburb of L.A. and we should not be treated as such."

For fans who can't make it to this weekend's event at the Block or the Spectrum, they can make their voices heard on this issue and request their free bumper stickers by logging on to the website, www.savetheanaheimangels.com or sending an e-mail to savetheanaheimangels@anaheim.net.
