| ANAHEIM, CA - (May 30, 2006) - The Anaheim City Council today authorized the City's legal team to appeal the decision made in Orange County Superior Court, which allowed Angels Baseball, L.P. to continue to use "Los Angeles" in the name of the franchise. The vote was 4-1, with Councilmember Harry S. Sidhu, P.E. in opposition.
The City Council expressed disappointment that several attempts at a mutually agreeable resolution with Angels Baseball, L.P. were unsuccessful. City and Angels' staff and legal representatives met on numerous occasions but were unable to reach a compromise.
In filing the appeal the City's legal team will cite numerous reversible errors committed by the court during the trial earlier this year. It will also argue that the court's statement of decision went beyond the scope of the jury verdict by granting Angels Baseball, L.P. the opportunity to use "Los Angeles" as the sole geographic reference to the team.
The appeal is another step in the process of protecting the City's link with the Angels' baseball franchise that has played in a City-owned facility since 1966. The City sought a preliminary injunction last year because it feared that Anaheim would disappear from usage in the team name if it did nothing. Anaheim has essentially vanished from the team name since the name change in January, 2005.
Once the paperwork is filed sometime later this week, the appeal process can take up to 12-15 months. Media Contact: Ruth Ruiz 714.765.5060 more city news
