In 2005, Anaheim Public Utilities' Water System was awarded a $250,000 Local Groundwater Assistance Grant from the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to fund the destruction of 10 abandoned wells in Anaheim, mostly remnants of Anaheim's agricultural days. The proper “destruction” of an abandoned well provides for sealing the well, thus closing a potential direct pathway for surface contaminants to reach our local groundwater supplies and degrade water quality. There is the added benefit of improving community aesthetics by removing all the abandoned above ground equipment.
The proper sealing of these 10 wells was completed in 2007 and a final report has been accepted by the DWR. You may access a series of before and after photographs of several well sites in PDF format. Click Here.
Anaheim Public Utilities will continue to explore potential grant opportunities to fund projects that protect groundwater and enhance our community.
