Motorized Scooters

Scooter Illustration

Anaheim residents are noticing an increase in the number of motorized scooters on the streets. These two-wheel scooters can create a safety hazard for the people riding them and the driving public, especially if they are used unsafely or illegally. Parents who choose to allow their children to operate these motorized scooters need to be familiar with the requirements of the California Vehicle Code as it relates to these scooters. Parents must also ensure that their children meet these legal requirements when they operate the scooters on city streets.

MOTORIZED SCOOTER OPERATORS:

Must be 16 years of age or older.
Must wear a bicycle helmet.
Must not carry passengers.
Must follow the rules of the road the same as cars do.

THE SCOOTER:

Must have a braked wheel.
Have a white light to the front and red light to the rear if driven at night.
Must have a yellow reflector on each side if driven at night.

THE SCOOTER MAY NOT:

May not be operated on the street if the speed limit is over 25 MPH
May not be operated on the sidewalks.

For the most part, the only streets in the City of Anaheim that have a speed limit of 25 MPH are neighborhood residential streets. Please use extreme caution when driving near a scooter on the road and if you are driving one, PLEASE do so carefully and within the guidelines of the vehicle code. The Anaheim Police Department will be enforcing the California Vehicle Codes in regards to motorized scooters and violations are subject to citation and under some circumstances the scooter can be impounded.
