Making our neighborhoods and communities safer is every resident’s responsibility and with Hi Neighbor, community policing has never been easier. Community policing is a collaborative effort between the Anaheim Police Department and your neighborhood to identify and solve community problems. Anaheim residents can now download helpful information to assist them in policing their own communities and neighborhoods.
Police are often called to resolve neighborhood disputes simply because neighbors—who do not know each other—have a disagreement. By getting to know your neighbor, many of the root causes of neighborhood disputes can be avoided. Nevertheless, through Hi Neighbor, we have provided you with some simple suggestions to help you resolve neighborhood disputes.
Effective community policing has a positive impact on reducing neighborhood crime, helping to reduce fear of crime and enhancing the quality of life in the community. It accomplishes these things by combining the efforts and resources of the police, the local government, and the community. While police continue to handle crime fighting and law enforcement responsibilities, the police and community work together to modify conditions that can encourage criminal behavior. Creating a Neighborhood Watch is one way for the community to assist the police with finding solutions to crime.
Start up a Neighborhood Watch/Business Watch in your neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program, which enlists the active participation of citizens in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities. It involves:
Neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance;
Citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods;
Implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security, security through environmental design.
There are currently over 185 neighborhood watches established in the City of Anaheim. If you are interested in starting a neighborhood watch, download the Hi Neighbor Neighborhood Watch How To Guide to begin creating a neighborhood watch today! The most common form of property crime in Anaheim neighborhoods is graffiti. Through the Anaheim Community Anti-Graffiti Effort (ACAGE), City staff, in partnership with residents, community leaders and the business community, has developed a comprehensive strategy that attacks graffiti from all sides of this complex issue. ACAGE focuses on a variety of fronts, including education, protection of property, prompt removal, applicable justice efforts and collaborating with local programs serving Anaheim youth to reinforce the negative consequences of graffiti. To learn more about ACAGE, please visit www.anaheim.net/acage.

Traffic is a major factor that affects the livability of a community. As speeding and vehicular volume increases, walking to the neighborhood store or even across to the street to a neighbor's house can be an uncomfortable event. Where a person lives is a very important part of how a person feels about their community. The noise, safety hazards, vehicular speeds, vehicular volumes, existence of sidewalks and bike lanes all contribute to the neighborhood’s integrity. Here are some Hi Neighbor tips to control traffic in your neighborhood:
Work with your neighbors to discuss the traffic, speeding and parking issues in your neighborhood.
Place cones or “Children Playing” warning signs when children are playing in the street.
Parking cars on both sides of the street to narrow the passage way will help slow speeding cars.
Know which cars belong in the neighborhood can help with the confusion about illegally parked cars or abandoned vehicles.
In some situations, the Police Department can respond to traffic complaints with enforcement and traffic engineering solutions. The fastest way to contact the Police Department about traffic issues in your neighborhood is through Anaheim Anytime. The Police Department can also be reached at (714) 765-1900. Neighborhoods can also request help from the Police Department and Traffic Engineering to improve signage, and discuss restricted or permit parking.
