On May 22, 1998, Anaheim began its second sister city relationship with Vitoria-Gasteiz, located in northern Spain. Vitoria-Gasteiz is known for its magnificent cathedrals and museums and is rich in historical, musical and its artistic background. Nowadays, the City is known for being an environmental advocate, by providing pedestrian precincts in large areas of the City, as well as various cultural activities, public services and sports facilities for its people. In 2011, Vitoria-Gasteiz earned the prestigious designation of European Green Capital. The late Santiago Echevarria, an Anaheim businessman, fostered this relationship.

Because of this, the City became known as the trading center of Europe.
