Anaheim Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES)

RACES members register their skills, qualifications and radio equipment capability and donate their time for training and operational readiness in the event they are needed during a disaster.  All radio operators are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission.  Each RACES member agrees to attend regular meetings and participate in training sessions, donating their time and skills to provide supplemental or emergency communications in the event of a local or widespread disaster. Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

The Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) program is to provide volunteer support staff to aid police personnel in the delivery of services to the citizens of Anaheim. VIPS representatives supplement existing departmental services, freeing paid employees to perform their necessary duties. VIPS representatives are placed in areas which utilize their skills, talents and interests, while offering a challenging and rewarding experience. Most importantly, VIPS representatives build community relations by giving the public the opportunity to become involved in the day to day activities of their police department. Anaheim Sports, Inc. makes community development a priority. Through Angels Care and Anaheim Ducks Care, both funds of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, the Anaheim Angels and Anaheim Ducks of Anaheim are able to distribute grants for various projects to local charities. Angels Care and Anaheim Ducks Care have enabled both teams to fund youth programs like the Gene Autry RBI League, Angels Rookie Ball program and Anaheim Ducklings Youth Hockey League which provides a place for thousands of underserved children to become involved in the two sports. ASI is also very active in assisting with local health-related causes such as Muscular Dystrophy and Cystic Fibrosis along with drug prevention and educational programs and numerous children's programs to accommodate the diverse needs throughout the local region. The Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation was established as a charitable trust in 1955 upon the death of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, the longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. Since its institution, the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation has grown into a major philanthropic organization, contributing more than $113 million nationally in charitable distributions in 1999. The partnership extended locally in 1994 with the addition of Angels Care with Anaheim Ducks Care in 1997.

A chapter of the National Assistance League, the Assistance League of Anaheim assists the community through a variety of programs, including: Operation Sight Saver which provides equipment for partially sighted individuals; Kids on the Block program offering puppets for third grade students; and Operation School Bell which clothes children unable to attend school due to lack of proper clothing. A private, non-profit organization, Paint Your Heart Out Anaheim recruits volunteers from the community and uses donated supplies and materials or those bought with donations to repair, and refurbish homes for low-income senior or disabled Anaheim homeowners. Criteria for the recipients includes: low-income according to HUD guidelines, own their home, has an Anaheim address and is either over 65 years old or receiving disability. Since 1991, 441 homes have been refurbished, a value of $3 million dollars in neighborhood improvements, at no cost to the homeowners. Applications for homeowners and volunteers available on-line. Applications for potential homes are reviewed September through January. Applications are approved in February. Repairs and prep work is done in March and April. Homes are painted the first Saturday in May. Major fundraisers include the Celebrity Waiter Gala in October and the Wine and Jazz Festival in June. In 2000, PYHOA expanded its services to include renovating historic structures and building homes for low to moderate income families. This project will also serve as a fundraising mechanism for PYHOA, once the properties are sold.

Santiago Canyon College offers a variety of free continuing education classes to anyone 18 years or older as well as a broad range of college credit classes that allow Anaheim residents to work toward an associate degree, university transfer, career preparation and personal enrichment. College credit classes are available to California residents for just $11 per unit. The college is one of two fully accredited colleges in the Rancho Santiago Community College District.

The WISEPlace Steps to Independence Program is a six-month program that works with five target groups of high-risk women who have become homeless. The target groups include: victims of domestic violence; recovering substance abusers; emancipating minors; seniors; and the developmentally disabled. Housed in the organization's Hotel for Women, the program provides residents with meals, clothing, personal care items, individual and group counseling, employment assistance, life-skills classes, transportation and referrals for health, legal and financial assistance. With a capacity of 30 beds, WISEPlace successfully places 60-70 women back into the community as independent, productive members in any given year.

The shop is open to the public six days a week and makes finding clothes for work, play and a special day affordable for any budget. Along with great quality clothing, customers can find accessories, books, movies, small furniture and electronic items. All proceeds benefit Working Wardrobes and the 5,000 clients we serve each year; clients who are eager to get back to work!
