Trash Truck Safety

The City of Anaheim and Republic Services care about your family’s safety.

Trash trucks operate on a daily basis collecting trash, recycling, and yard waste from homes and businesses. Safety is the driver’s first concern, so please the take time to discuss the following safety issues with your children:

  • Always stand a safe distance away from the trucks. Trucks should be viewed from a distance at all times.
  • Stopped trucks still have moving parts and that can harm you.
  • When you hear a ‘beep’ ‘beep’ ‘beep’ or see white lights on the back of the truck, it is backing up and you need to move away.
  • Never attempt to climb on a truck whether moving or stationary.
  • Do not play near containers or dumpsters – you may not know when the truck is coming to empty them!
  • It takes a trash truck two times longer to stop than a car.
  • A trash truck can weigh 25 Tons, the equivalent of five (5) elephants.
  • Trash trucks make frequent stops and back up often – do not follow on a bike, skates, or skateboard.
  • If you can’t see the driver, the driver can’t see you.
  • Watch out for cars and trucks making right turns. Before stepping off the curb, look over your shoulder, left and right to make sure there isn’t a vehicle behind you making a right turn.
