Enhancing the Quality of Life in Neighborhoods
Enhancing neighborhoods is a priority of the Anaheim City Council.
Anaheim's neighborhoods are unique, ranging from those that are "historical", with homes built during the city's earliest years, to those constructed as developments in the 1950's and through the final years of the 20th century. Anaheim's
neighborhoods are the lifeblood of the community and as such, are a critical
asset for the City to assist, protect and serve.
Anaheim, similar to other cities, has performed well over the years by providing
a wide array of traditional municipal services to neighborhoods, such as police
and fire services, street maintenance, tree trimming, etc. However, greater
importance is now being placed on increasing and sustaining the overall "livability" of neighborhoods.
This increase in neighborhood livability is being achieved by the city working
together as a partner with neighborhood leaders to ensure that there are strong
connections not only between neighborhood residents and city hall, but between
all neighborhood stakeholders having an impact on the quality of life within
neighborhoods. Apartments owners, school principals, businesses and religious
organizations are all additional neighborhood stakeholders who are critical
partners in contributing to the increased livability of Anaheim's neighborhoods.

What Does Neighborhood Services Do?
Neighborhood Services facilitates the City's
interdepartmental efforts to improve the quality of life in Anaheim neighborhoods
by:
Serving As A "Single Point of Contact" For Anaheim
Residents
Neighborhood Services serves as a "single point of contact" for residents needing assistance from the City of Anaheim. When residents are unsure of what city department can assist them with a particular neighborhood need, Neighborhood Services serves in an "ombudsman" role
to ensure residents are connected with the correct city
department.

Helping Neighborhoods Become Better Places To Live
Neighborhood Services assists neighborhoods
by bringing together neighborhood stakeholders (residents, property owners,
school officials, etc.) to identify ways to make their neighborhoods better
places in which to live.
Over 30 Anaheim neighborhoods have been assisted by Neighborhoods Services.
Each of these neighborhoods has created and implemented a neighborhood improvement
action plan. Click here for a sample plan in PDF format. Examples of actions that have assisted in improving the livability of neighborhoods
include:
- Elimination of drug and gang activity.
- Installation of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
- Installation of street lights, construction of "traffic calming" devices, such as traffic signals, street cul-de-sacs,
lane striping, and traffic signage.
- Installation of playground equipment.
- Creation of garden areas.
- Implementation of after-school programs.
- Implementation of neighborhood-wide clean-up
campaigns.

Developing Neighborhood Leaders
A key ingredient to the success of neighborhood
improvement efforts is the identification and training of potential leaders
who can lead their neighbors
in community-wide
decision making.
The Anaheim Neighborhood Academy was created to provide potential neighborhood
leaders with the skills and information to lead their neighborhoods. The
Neighborhood Academy is administered by Neighborhood Services and is offered
every 18 months. For more information on the Academy, please contact Neighborhood Services at 765-4456.

Assisting Residents in Providing Input to the City's Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG) Program
Did you know that the City of Anaheim receives federal CDBG funds annually
for the purpose of providing public improvements and services? The City has
created 4 geographically based Neighborhood Councils to provide valuable public
input into how the city spends these funds. For more information, please contact
Anaheim Sporn at 714-765-5235.
