Outreach Programs

Bringing the Adventure to you! Oak Canyon Nature Center Outreach Programs bring the captivating natural world to your classroom, library or meeting place. These lively 45-minute presentations are informative and educational in an enjoyable learning format. Programs feature active learning, live animal demonstrations, and hands-on exhibits, although the exact makeup of each varies with subject and audience.

There are several program themes to choose from:

  • All About Birds: Take a closer look at what makes a bird a bird. See how feathers, wings, beaks, and a variety of adaptations make the difference. This program will review the unique features of birds such as hummingbirds, owls, woodpeckers, and many more.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians: Compares reptiles and amphibians. "Reptiles" will cover tortoises, snakes, and lizards. "Amphibians" reviews salamanders, frogs, and toads. We'll discuss the ways these animals are adapted for survival and view some of these animals up close.
  • Insects and other Amazing Arthropods: These animals with exoskeletons, jointed legs, and segmented bodies include such fascinating creatures as butterflies, walking sticks, spiders, millipedes, and scorpions. This program reviews arthropod classification, habitats, and survival adaptations.
  • Animals, Animals, Animals: This program focuses on the survival strategies and special adaptations of a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, and arthropods. Special attention is given to native California species. Highlights include a close-up view of live animals.
  • Endangered Species: Look at the process of extinction and how human population affects other species. Discussion will focus on the causes and effects of habitat loss, wildlife trade, and pollution that put species in danger. Find out how people are finding ways to help species bounce back.
  • Ancient Mysteries: We will explore the uncovered secrets of T. Rex and giant sloths. Discover how paleontologists solve mysteries using fossil clues. Describes dinosaur classification, how they compare to other animals, and how they are named. Examine authentic fossils and replicas up close.
  • Friends of the Earth: Not long ago, people depended upon their abilities to live harmoniously with plant and animal resources. This program integrates Native American stories and related hands-on activities, which will inspire participants and help them understand the influence they have on their surroundings.
  • Animal "Gross"ology: Slime, slobber, and sweat...an icky concoction of interesting, incredible, and unforgettably disgusting facts that's a perfect hit with youth age 7-12.  A squishy, squashy, gooey good time is in store for all!
