Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC)

The City of Anaheim is a leader in addressing the needs of travelers and is currently engaged in the development of projects such as the:
- Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) project;
- Anaheim Fixed-Guideway system (linking ARTIC to the Platinum Triangle and the Anaheim Resort Area); and the
- California High Speed Rail Authority to provide a high-speed train (HST) connection between Southern and Northern California of which ARTIC will be the southern terminus of the Los Angeles-Anaheim segment.
The ARTIC project is a partnership between the City of Anaheim and the OCTA, and is a multi-year, multi-phase project with each phase coinciding with new and/or expanded transportation services and development. The first phase of this project, valued at approximately $180 million, shall consist of site work and preparation, transportation center and supporting facilities, trackwork and platforms, parking, public art, and access and street improvements. Completion date is expected mid-2013. At full build out, it shall serve as an intermodal hub for several transit modes such as Amtrak, Metrolink, local and international bus, shuttles, bikes/pedestrians, Fixed Guideway, High-Speed Rail, and the proposed California-Nevada Maglev. It will also provide opportunities for Public Private Partnerships (P3) development for commercial, retail, office and residential uses with its location in the City’s Platinum Triangle Mixed Use Overlay Zone (http://www.anaheim.net/article.asp?id=1161).
In May of this year, the Anaheim City Council approved the team of Parsons Brinckerhoff/HOK for architectural/engineering design of ARTIC. Designed to be a world-class, iconic transportation center, and built to LEED™ "Platinum" certification, ARTIC will serve as a connectivity gateway and mixed-use destination for the region on a prominent 16-acre site owned by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and the City of Anaheim. The Anaheim Fixed-Guideway project is in its environmental study and public input phase. A “fixed-guideway” describes a system where transit vehicles operate on a dedicated alignment, such as rail or track. There are a variety of fixed-guideway technologies that could operate on this type of alignment such as monorail, automatic people mover, low-speed magnetic levitation, and personal rapid transit. This connection will link Orange County’s “backbone” Metrolink commuter rail system to Anaheim’s major employment and activity centers in the Platinum Triangle and The Anaheim Resort™. OCTA Bravo! Bus Rapid Transit Proposals The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is planning three new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines to connect parts of Orange County. BRT is a new approach to traditional bus travel. The new buses will only stop at key destinations in order to provide faster service in existing transit corridors. California-Nevada Super Speed (MagLev) Train The California-Nevada Interstate Maglev project is proposing the construction of a 269-mile Maglev train line from Las Vegas, Nevada to Anaheim, California. The first 40-mile segment received $45 million in 2005 for the planning phase. This segment would run from Las Vegas to Primm, Nevada, with proposed service to the new Las Vegas Airport. |
