• Did You Know? Sparky the Fire Dog was born on March 18, 1951 in Boston, MA. Boston was also the site of the first paid fire department in North America after a large fire in 1679. A fire engine had to be imported from England!

• Did You Know? The first automatic electric fire alarm was invented in 1890 by Francis Robbins Upton and Fernando J. Dibble. Upton was an acquaintance of Thomas Edison’s, but there is no evidence that Edison helped with the project. The first truly “affordable” home smoke detectors weren’t invented until 1967.

• Did You Know? Until the late 19th century, heating in America was most often by wood. Households used wood-burning brick fireplaces and versions of the cast iron Franklin stove, invented in 1742. • Did You Know? On November 28, 1942, the Cocoanut Grove Night Club fire, still this nation’s deadliest nightclub fire, killed 492 people. The Boston nightclub had some of its doors bricked up or bolted, and the main entrance was only a revolving door. The club had a licensed capacity of 500, but on the fatal night about 1,000 customers were inside.                                    Source:NFPA
