- Did You Know? The first automatic electric fire alarm was invented in 1890 by Francis Robbins Upton and Fernando J. Dibble. Upton was an acquaintance of Thomas Edison’s, but there is no evidence that Edison helped with the project. The first truly “affordable” home smoke detectors weren’t invented until 1967.
