Preparing for your Annual
Housing Quality Standard (HQS) Inspection
In order for your unit to pass inspection, it must meet certain requirements of the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The list below covers those items which most commonly cause a unit to fail an inspection.
For annual inspections, please check your unit prior to the arrival of the inspector. It is highly recommended that you report any needed reports to the property owner/manager well in advance of the inspection. Please do not wait for the HQS inspector to cite your unit before taking action. Remember, your unit must pass inspection annually within the allotted time frame or payments will stop.
As a tip, the same HQS standards apply to initial and annual HQS inspection. So, if you are moving into a new unit, please walk through the unit and check for the items below BEFORE you request an inspection to avoid any delays in the beginning date of the lease and contract. No payments can be made for any period prior to a unit passing an initial inspection.
HQS Reference Documents
The documents below contain general information on the items that must be in operable condition in your unit in order to meet all Housing Quality Standards (HQS). It is recommended that you review this information at least annually, prior to your scheduled HQS inspection.
