ANAHEIM PUBLIC UTILITIES AWARDED “GREENEST CITY” AWARD

ANAHEIM, CA (August 27, 2010) -

Last week Anaheim Public Utilities became the proud recipient of the Emerald Award for “Greenest City or Government Agency” from the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Orange County.

The Emerald Awards are designed to give recognition to companies of all sizes who have taken measures to be more environmentally-conscious or sustainable. Anaheim was selected as the top candidate in the City/Government Agency Category, for the Green Connection, a program adopted by the Anaheim City Council in 2006 that sets out a series of sustainable goals for the City, and the many contributions it has made to the community.

As Orange County’s only municipal, not-for-profit utility, Anaheim Public Utilities focuses on making decisions that are in the best interest of Anaheim customers. This often goes beyond providing reliable water and electric service at economical rates: the Utility has a record of environmental concern and sensitivity.  "Anaheim Public Utilities has designed multiple programs for our residents and businesses to enhance Anaheim's sustainability, said Marcie Edwards, Anaheim Public Utilities General Manager and Assistant City Manager. "On behalf of Mayor Pringle and the Anaheim City Council, we are honored to be recognized with the Emerald Award".

The Anaheim Green Connection continues to enhance the efficiency measures embraced by thousands of customers, and to steer the City towards ambitious conservation and sustainability goals. As a result of their recent aggressive energy efficiency efforts, Anaheim has reduced CO2 emissions by 1.1 billion pounds. Since 2000, education, rebates and other incentives have saved Anaheim utility customers 698 million kilowatt-hours – enough energy to supply 22,600 homes for ten years. The utility aims to increase Anaheim Public Utilities’ purchases of renewable energy resources to 20% and reduce citywide water use 15% by 2015, purchase alternative fuel vehicles so 90% of the Utilities vehicles are Alternative Fuel Vehicles by 2020, and encourage Green Building certification through an array of green building programs and incentives.

For these efforts, Anaheim Public Utilities was awarded with an Emerald Award plaque, at a luncheon ceremony at last week’s Green and Health Expo at the Sheraton Park in Anaheim.  Steve Sciortino, Assistant General Manager – Joint Services, was in attendance to accept the honor on behalf of the utility.
