KAISER PERMANENTE ORANGE COUNTY AWARDED LEED BUILDING CERTIFICATION

ANAHEIM, CA (June 14, 2011) -

Parking Structure at New Anaheim Medical Center Receives Silver Level Award

The seven-story parking structure for the new Kaiser Permanente Orange County Anaheim Medical Center, was recently awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification under the New Construction Projects rating system.  LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for designing, constructing and operating the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high-performing buildings.  The goal of the system is to insure that buildings meet requirements of low levels of energy consumption and increased levels of indoor environmental quality, all while maintaining a minimal impact on the building’s surroundings.  Through enhanced design of building systems and proper selection of construction material, LEED buildings consume less power and water, provide a healthier indoor environment, and produce less waste by lower consumption and recycling.

Kaiser Permanente teamed with the City of Anaheim and Anaheim Public Utilities to design and build the LEED certified parking structure by following specific design criteria and construction methods in the areas of recycled materials, site selection, water use, indoor air quality and electrical efficiency.  The Silver Level Certification identifies the Anaheim Parking Structure as a pioneering example of sustainable design and demonstrates leadership in transforming the building industry.  Anaheim Public Utilities provided Kaiser Permanente technical knowledge and expedited permit processing to encourage sustainable design and high-performing buildings through its Green Building Program.

“Kaiser Permanente has a long history of energy conservation and environmental stewardship,” said Julie Miller-Phipps, senior vice president and executive director of Kaiser Permanente Orange County.  “In collaboration with the City of Anaheim, we’re proud to be awarded the LEED Silver Level Certification Award.  As one of the largest health care providers, we aspire to provide services in a manner that protects and enhances the environment and the health of communities now and for future generations.”

“We’re proud to have Kaiser Permanente as part of our community, creating jobs and contributing to our economy.  We have always known Kaiser Permanente as a quality health care provider, with this accomplishment, their leadership proves that the company is also dedicated to preserving our community’s natural resources,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait.

The parking structure, with 1,562 spaces, will serve Kaiser Permanente Orange County members at the new Anaheim Medical Center, scheduled to open October 9, 2012.  At completion, the 27-acre campus will house two medical office buildings and a 262-bed hospital, which will replace the existing 200-bed hospital on Lakeview Avenue.  This new state-of-the-art medical center, nearly 750,000 square feet, will allow Kaiser Permanente to better serve its members and Orange County communities.  The project will create approximately 1,200 jobs, both permanent and construction related.
