ANAHEIM, CA (October 7, 2011) -

This year’s Public Power Week, held Oct. 3-9, also marked the 25-year anniversary of the nationwide event. Anaheim Public Utilities, along with more than 2,000 other electric utilities across America that serve approximately 45 million Americans, utilized the week-long celebration to educate its customers on the benefits of being served by a publicly-owned utility. Anaheim Public Utilities is locally owned and governed, has excellent power and water reliability, and provides some of the lowest rates in the county.

Special exhibits, games and bucket rides were held on Thursday, October 6 at the Downtown Farmers’ Market, which offered an interactive way to educate residents, students and visitors about the role of its utility.  The always popular “bucket rides” proved to be a big hit with the 4th and 5th grade students from Salk Elementary School. Students were treated to a 55 feet climb into the air and gave them a unique opportunity to view the city from a different perspective. Booths and displays provided the visitors information about the various electric services, energy-saving tips, and information from the dedicated employees who help design and operate Anaheim’s century-old electric utility.

Materials distributed also focused on Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait’s “Hi-Neighbor” initiative, which encourages residents to get to know their neighbors. “While the majority of power outages and water interruptions our customers are likely to experience are short term, we want our community to be prepared and to know what to do if they are without water and power for an extended period during a major disruption,” said General Manager Marcie Edwards.  “And by working with their neighbors they can be more effective in staying safe and resilient.”
