Anaheim Public Utilities Rolls Out Two New Programs to Bring Green Power to Anaheim

ANAHEIM, CA (September 17, 2002) - Anaheim Public Utilities offers two new voluntary programs to Anaheim residents and businesses, providing them the opportunity to help purchase clean, green power for Anaheim. "Green power" refers to electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, geothermal (steam), and various forms of biomass (organic waste). These resources provide an unlimited supply of energy that is environmentally friendly.

Participants in these programs commit to having the Utility add a fee to their utility statements each billing period for a minimum of six months. This fee will offset costs associated with bringing green power to Anaheim, which is more expensive than the bulk of the utility's energy, which is generated from conventional sources such as coal, oil, and gas. Participants determine how much money they would like to contribute and which of the following programs they would like to support:

Green Power for the Grid:Participation in Green Power for the Grid helps Anaheim Public Utilities bring electricity to Anaheim, via the regional electric grid, that is generated from clean, renewable sources. While contributions to this program are not tax-deductible, it does benefit all of Anaheim's customers by increasing renewable generation in Anaheim's power resource portfolio.

Sun Power for the Schools:Contributions toward Sun Power for the Schools help pay for the purchase and installation of solar power systems at selected Anaheim schools, grades K through high school. Contributions, which may be tax-deductible for this program only, will help schools reduce their electric bills and increase environmental awareness among students, teachers, and parents. In some cases solar power systems may be constructed to also create shade for lunch areas or in parking lots. Schools are selected on a first-come, first-served basis as well as their ability to assist with funding and meet program guidelines. Participants are advised to consult their tax advisor for tax-deductible advantages, if any.

Residents may sign up for either green power program by agreeing to pay an additional $1.50, $3, or $4.50 per 30-day billing period. Business customers may sign up by agreeing to pay an additional $15, $30, or $45 per 30-day billing period.
