City Honors Longtime Anaheim Resident with Dedication of the Anaheim Waterwise Garden
ANAHEIM, CA (September 10, 1998) - City officials Thursday dedicated Anaheim's Waterwise Garden to Sally White, a 45 year Anaheim resident, in recognition of her hard work and many years of voluntarism towards the promotion of the beautification of Anaheim. Mayor Tom Daly unveiled the plaque to a crowd filled with family, friends and community dignitaries. Also on hand were representatives of the many organizations White helped develop, including: Anaheim Beautiful, Anaheim Releaf, Let's Build a Pepsi Park and many more. City Manager James Ruth, a long-time friend of White, spoke of her accomplishments over the years. She established White Realty in 1965, raised four children, is the grandmother of six and in her spare time, won several awards for her voluntarism and development of community organizations and programs, while holding membership at the Cameo Auxiliary of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Orange County Harbors, Beaches and Parks Commission, Anaheim Arts Council, and Anaheim Parks and Recreation Commission. Anaheim's Waterwise Garden, a xeriscape demonstration garden, offers the public the opportunity to view and learn practical, water-saving landscape ideas. Considering that more than half of the water in a typical home is used outdoors, reducing water required for landscaping can result in substantial environmental and financial savings. Anaheim Public Utilites was able to take advantage of the renovation of the Amtrak Anaheim Station, integrating the waterwise garden to use as an example of how the community can save precious water resources and still have an attractive and pleasant environment. Anaheim's Waterwise Garden was created by landscape architect Renie Meier-Wong using the seven fundamental principles of waterwise landscaping: planning and design; appropriate plant selection; practical turf areas; efficient irrigation; soil improvements; use of mulches; and appropriate maintenance. In addition to providing an attractive setting for Amtrak commuters, the garden will lend itself to educational activities including workshops and lectures involving schools, garden clubs and the general public.
