THREE ANAHEIM STUDENTS’ POSTERS WIN SPOTS ON METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT’S ANNUAL "WATER IS LIFE" CALENDAR

ANAHEIM, CA (August 4, 2005) - Two Anaheim third-graders, Allison Cheung of Fairmont Private School and Tiffany Shu of Nohl Canyon Elementary School, as well as St. Boniface Catholic School sixth-grader Hannamarie de Castro were among the winners of Anaheim Public Utilities’ 15th Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest, and are now being recognized for their artistic ability by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California.

Each student’s water conservation poster will be featured in MWD’s 2006 annual Water is Life calendar. “Very rarely will one water agency have multiple winners selected for the prestigious MWD calendar in the same year,” said Cathy Templeton, coordinator of Anaheim Public Utilities’ water-efficiency programs. “Our three Anaheim winners were judged as demonstrating both outstanding artistic and creative ability, and for conveying their water conservation messages in a very original and unique way.”

The 2006 Water is Life calendar will feature 36 pieces of K-6 student artwork, selected from over 100 entries that were submitted by many of MWD’s 26-member and retail water agencies. Each year, MWD distributes its Water is Life calendar to member agencies, school principals, teachers and students using MWD’s educational materials, and MWD employees and directors. Approximately 15,000 teachers receive calendars during the year. MWD, Anaheim Public Utilities and other member agencies also distribute calendars to the general public at special events, including conferences, exhibits and water festivals.

Anaheim Public Utilities' annual winners were selected from close to 850 entries from public and private schools in Anaheim. The top 10 posters created by Anaheim's young artists were sent to MWD to compete against posters created by youthful artists representing other MWD member agencies.

Anaheim Public Utilities encourages its customers to save water, save money and help preserve our most precious resource by offering a variety of water-efficiency programs. Program information may be obtained by calling 765-4256.
