ANAHEIM PUBLIC UTILITIES, ANGELS BASEBALL
TEAM UP FOR WATER AWARENESS MONTH
ANAHEIM, CA (May 3, 2007) - To help celebrate Water Awareness Month in the City of Anaheim, the Angels are honoring the winners of Anaheim Public Utilities’ 17th annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. The young artists, first- through sixth-grade students from Anaheim elementary schools, will receive trophies on Tuesday, May 29, during a pre-game ceremony on the field prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the Seattle Mariners. (A list of winners, their schools and teachers is included with this press release.)
There were a total of 461 poster entries from 19 different Anaheim public and private schools this year. The winning posters will be exhibited in the lobby of City Hall West, 201 S. Anaheim Blvd., for the entire month of May. They may also be viewed by logging onto Anaheim’s Web site at www.anaheim.net and clicking on Public Utilities, then Poster Contest Winners under Water Services, or Click Here.
On April 24, the Anaheim City Council officially proclaimed May as Water Awareness Month in Anaheim. During this time, Anaheim Public Utilities will be participating in several events to raise awareness of the importance of conserving and protecting the most precious natural resource. To jump-start Water Awareness Month, Utilities hosted the first of four Home Gardeners California Friendly Landscape Workshops on April 21 at the Downtown Community Center. The final workshop is May 19. The department was also a sponsor of the Orange County Water District Groundwater Guardian Team’s 11th Annual Children’s Water Education Festival, May 1-2.
On May 10 and May 24, Utilities will staff a booth at the Downtown Farmer’s Market to distribute free water-saving devices such as low-flow showerheads, adjustable hose nozzles and faucet aerators. Customers will also have the opportunity to speak to Anaheim staff members about the benefits available to them through the many water- and energy-saving programs Anaheim has to offer.
For the fifth straight year, Utilities will once again sponsor Anaheim teams in the Metropolitan Water District’s Solar Cup Boat Races. Canyon High School and Anaheim High School’s Transportation Academy are among the 41 schools competing at this year’s event, May 18-20, at Lake Skinner near Temecula. The Solar Cup is an educational program where students build their own solar-powered boats and prepare technical reports. This year, they will present a visual display that will solve a local or regional water issue.
By offering several water-efficiency programs, Utilities encourages its customers to use water wisely. For more information about water conservation programs, call 765-4256 or visit www.anaheim.net and click on Public Utilities, then Water Services.
