ANAHEIM PUBLIC UTILITIES LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAM
TO IMPROVE HOME’S OVERALL PERFORMANCE
-- Program is first of its kind for a California municipal utility
ANAHEIM, CA (May 17, 2007) - Anaheim Public Utilities has launched a program called the Home Investment Package (HIP), a first of its kind to be implemented by a municipal utility in California, that could result in homeowners receiving more that $15,000 in incentives for their participation. HIP will provide Anaheim’s residential homeowners the opportunity to: • lower utility bills and home-maintenance costs; • save energy (up to 30 percent); • improve air quality and comfort; • improve safety throughout a home; • increase a home’s resale value; and • increase the life and value of a home by eliminating such problems as leaks, poor drainage and mold.
Following a HIP whole-house assessment, homeowners may receive a waiver of permit fees (up to $1,000) for energy-efficient improvements, up to $14,000 in incentives to install solar PV systems and hundreds of dollars in ENERGY STAR rebates. Special low-cost financing is also available.
“HIP promotes whole-house diagnostics, makes home improvement recommendations and provides certified contractors to produce high-performance homes,” said Mariann Long, an assistant general manager for Anaheim Public Utilities. “It is the only program in California that has mandated Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification of its contractors.”
The Anaheim City Council recognized the first five newly certified HIP contractors at its May 15 meeting. The contractors recently completed intensive classroom and field certification tests to participate in the unique program.
HIP supports the City’s Green Connection initiative, which offers incentives, help and information to encourage homeowners and businesses to embrace energy and resource efficiency, and sustainability. HIP is modeled after the federal Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program and incorporates its strict, official guidelines.
“The City of Anaheim prides itself in being a leader in innovative and comprehensive solutions to our energy use and customer needs,” Long said. “HIP will benefit anyone who has an interest in making his or her home more efficient, safe and durable. The program is ideally tailored for those who might already be considering renovations or replacing old appliances, or who may simply wish to ensure that their home performs at its peak and as energy efficiently as possible.”
