ANAHEIM, CA - (October 11, 2012) -

The Anaheim community was invited to help celebrate Public Power Week Oct. 7-13 by participating in a day-long event, at today’s Downtown Farmers Market. The festivities began at 10 a.m. and showcased displays that highlighted electric safety equipment and materials, information about our available rebates and incentives, and a variety of electric vehicles. The popular bucket truck rides lifted riders 60 feet in the air, providing a spectacular view of the city.

Public Power Week is celebrated annually by more than 2,000 other electric utilities across America which, collectively, provide electricity on a not-for-profit basis to 45 million Americans. This event gives the Anaheim community the opportunity to learn the benefits of having their own utility – the only municipally-owned electric and water utility in Orange County.

Our focus this year was youth education. Nearly 150 4th - 8th grade students attended our event. Students from Salk and Maxwell Elementary schools, as well as students from Project SAY (a youth development program) at Sycamore Junior High, participated in a scavenger hunt, seeking answers to electric-related questions.  As part of our education, the utility distributed energy saving kits to help our customers make their homes energy efficient and help them save money.

“From this experience, we hope these students took away some knowledge about their local utility.  Whether that means remembering to turn off the light in their bedroom or being cautious when they see a downed power line, we hope the information proves valuable to students and parents alike,”  said Marcie Edwards, General Manager of Anaheim Public Utilities.
