WaterSmart Landscape Award

Anaheim Public Utilities, in partnership with Anaheim Beautiful, is proud to announce its annual WaterSmart Landscape Award program.  The contest is open to Anaheim residents and businesses that has California-Friendly landscape. We are looking for landscapes that excel in design, creativity, plant selection, and irrigation system. Winners are recognized at a Public Utilities Board meeting June 2018 as part of the celebration of Water Awareness Month in California.

2017 WaterSmart Landscape Award Winners

Program Guidelines 


  •    Water customer of Anaheim Public Utilities                          
  •    Must have installed California Friendly®/native plants       
  •    Only front yard, parkways, and common areas are eligible      
  •    Artificial turf projects are ineligible

Program Rules      
  •    Nomination deadline: May 18, 2018
  •    Three ways to nominate:                                       
            o    Complete an ONLINE APPLICATION
            o    Email entries to: savewater@anaheim.net                                      
            o    Call in entries to: 714-765-4250
  •    Please provide as much information as you can, i.e.:                                       
            o    Name                                       
            o    Address                                      
            o    Short description explaining what you liked about the landscape             
  •    Winners will be notified directly by phone

Participating nominees must submit the following:
  •    Short description of your project (include plant list)
  •    Submit 4 color photos of landscaped area (include 2 wide-angle view photos)   
  •    Provide a signed waiver to release photos to the public 
  •    Copy of your water bill

Judging Criteria
  1.    Appropriate Plant Selection
            o    California Friendly®/natives
  2.    Project Creativity
            o    Creative and innovative landscape design
  3.    Landscape Design
            o    Plant color, textures, form, repetition, organization, and unity will be considered
  4.    Irrigation System
            o    Designed to reduce runoff, use of low flow drip line or appropriate equipment to maintain landscape

Turf Removal Program
For a limited time, the Turf Removal rebate is $1 per square foot of turf removed (up to 1,000 sq. ft. for residential and 1,500 sq. ft. for commercial customers).  Turf must be replaced with California Friendly ® and/or native plants or artificial turf.
