Denise Barnes was elected to the Anaheim City Council in November 2016, representing District 1 in west Anaheim.
Barnes is an executive committee member of the West Anaheim Neighborhood Development Council, a nonprofit group of residents working to improve west Anaheim.
She is a key contributor to the Western BBQ and West Anaheim Holiday Magic Christmas Tree Lighting annual events held at Twila Reid Park.
Barnes also serves on the boards of the Orange County Division board of directors of the League of California Cities, the Orange County Sanitation District, Orange County-City HAZMAT Emergency Response Authority and Orange County Senior Citizens Advisory Council Housing and Transportation Committee.
Additionally, she is a community volunteer serving the Maxwell Elementary Parent Teacher Association, Boy Scouts of America, First Baptist Church of Anaheim Homeless Outreach, The American Legion, Love Anaheim and Altrusa.
Before joining the Council, Barnes and her husband worked with city staff to improve their west Anaheim neighborhood and Maxwell Park by addressing issues including permit parking, street closures, crime and homelessness.
Barnes is a retired accounting supervisor for a major Orange County technology company. She and her husband founded their Anaheim-based property management company and know first-hand about the issues facing small businesses.
She moved to Anaheim more than 30 years ago and later settled in west Anaheim to raise her family.
In her spare time, Barnes enjoys playing senior volleyball at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center. She also enjoys competitive sailing with her husband.
