California's statewide power supply outlook
Sign up for real time updates on potential rotating power outages

We want you to know that Anaheim Public Utilities continues to be well-positioned in the power market and Anaheim has the generating resources in place to meet anticipated electric demand. However, even though our power supply outlook is stable, extremely hot weather conditions, coupled with supply or transmission limitations, could result in supply shortages in Southern California or even statewide. Because Anaheim relies on the statewide power grid to bring electricity home from resources throughout the West, Anaheim is required to participate in state-mandated load reductions, which may include rotating outages, to help maintain the overall stability of the power transmission grid.

Here are a few things you can do to be prepared:

Sign Up for Alerts
Receive email or text message alerts whenever electric service to your home or business is interrupted for any reason all-year long. Also, Anaheim Alert subscribers will receive general alerts when there is a high likelihood of rotating outages. These alerts will provide information about the power resource situation in California, and may include requests for conservation to help eliminate the need for rotating outages altogether.

Know Your Block Number
Anaheim uses a Block Number system to alert you if your service may be affected by a rotating outage. We will post the Block Numbers that will likely receive power interruptions on this website. The block number serving your home or business can be found on your Anaheim Public Utilities bill as shown in the picture to the right.

In the event that Anaheim is required to reduce electric consumption to help prevent a regional blackout, unfortunately, it will be necessary to interrupt electric service to several power blocks to achieve the necessary reductions. These power interruptions will last for approximately one hour, and the block numbers interrupted will be selected at random. The actual number of power blocks interrupted will depend on the severity of the regional shortage. However, if your block number is in fact interrupted as part of a rotating outage, then it is very unlikely that you will experience a second rotating outage because your block number will be placed at the bottom of the list for future rotating outages. During a regional power shortage, all utilities in the area will be required to implement rotating outages until the shortage has passed.

Remember, wise energy use, particularly during peak demand periods, remains a sound strategy during the hot summer months. Peak demand typically occurs between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. By shifting your energy use to non-peak hours, you help to ensure that energy supplies remain available to meet soaring demands for electricity to power air conditioning loads and rates for energy remain low.
