Every year, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California sponsors the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition during the month of May. Anaheim Public Utilities sponsors high school teams from Anaheim to compete in the boat race, which consists of about 40 schools and 800 students. The Solar Cup is a program in which students design and build boats that are powered by solar energy stored in batteries. The Solar Cup provides hands-on learning about water conservation, renewable energy sources, mechanical engineering and teamwork. For more information, call (714) 765-4250
