Where We’re At: June 21

Anaheim and Orange County continue to see high levels of weekly cases, but with some signs of moderation in new cases. The past two weeks have brought fewer cases than the week prior.
BA.2, a more catchy version of omicron, makes up more than 90 percent of cases in Orange County.
The trend began on April 1. Hospitalizations are also up since April but manageable.
For the seven days through June 21, Anaheim saw 781 new cases, down from 801 a week earlier. That was part of 6,701 Orange County cases for the week, down from 6,828 a week earlier.
The city is at a cumulative 84,918 past, active and recovered cases since reporting by city began in March 2020, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency.
Anaheim has seen 13,470 cases among children, with 95 reported in the past week.
There were two Anaheim deaths recorded in the past week.
Anaheim has seen 1,189 people pass from complications of COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus.

Knott Avenue to the west to Euclid Street to the east, and from Lincoln Avenue to the north to Ball Road to the south. The ZIP code is the most populous in Anaheim. It is also home to the most skilled nursing facilities along and near Beach Boulevard.

Fairmont Boulevard to the west into the eastern open space, from Riverside (91) Freeway to the north to southern city boundary. The ZIP code includes part of Anaheim’s eastern open space with no homes and has the fewest people.

Orange County Cases
We report Anaheim and Orange County case data Tuesdays and vaccine data weekly or whenever available.
As of June 21, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the lead agency for coronavirus in our region, is tracking 592,821 cases, with 6,701 new cases reported for the past seven days, down from 6,828 the week prior.
Orange County is seeing a continued rise in weekly cases as the omicron BA.2 subvariant drives new infections. Orange County Health Care Agency has also identified cases caused by the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants.
The uptick began on April 1 and is showing signs of moderation.
The seven-day average of new cases reported as of June 12 is 987. The number, which lags by two weeks, has ticked up since its recent low of 106 on March 19.
We continue to watch the trend with BA.2 estimated to make up 90 percent of new cases locally.
Among cases, there are 6,455 reported in skilled nursing facilities, 3,405 cases among jail inmates and 1,848 among the county’s homeless population.
The county’s estimate of those who have recovered from COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus, is at 562,008 people, or 95 percent.
There were 15 deaths recorded in the past week, down from 31 the week prior.
Deaths recorded on any given day occurred over several days, sometimes even weeks or months.
Orange County has seen 7,091 deaths — the first of which was recorded March 24, 2020 — from complications of COVID-19.
The county saw 60,771 polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests recorded for the seven days through June 21.
A PCR test is a swab sample that confirms if a person has a current infection.
The county has processed 9,362,415 PCR tests as of June 14.

As of data reported June 21, the county's current case rate is 29.5 per 100,000, up from 20.3 per 100,000 a week earlier.
The county's current positivity rate is 14 percent, up from 13.9 percent a week earlier.
