ANAHEIM, CA - (June 5, 2015) - The City of Anaheim is under way with a broad community outreach campaign for residents to help draw six City Council voting district boundaries that will shape Anaheim starting in 2016.
The next community meeting in Anaheim’s district boundary drawing process is Tuesday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the East Anaheim Community Center, 8201 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road.
At least two community meetings are being held each month around Anaheim and at City Hall. The purpose of the meetings is to gather comments and help participants draw and submit their own district boundary maps.
The City’s demographer is available one hour prior and immediately following each meeting to provide hands-on assistance for residents to create their own district boundary maps.
Several community members have volunteered to create brief videos, asking residents to participate in the meetings that will shape Anaheim’s future. Among them is the Hon. Edward J. Wallin, a retired Superior Court Judge who chairs the Advisory Committee that will make boundary recommendations to the City Council.
Meeting announcements in English and Spanish are being emailed to various interest groups, requesting they forward the message to the group’s constituencies. Articles are being written for City and community publications explaining the process and inviting participation.
Flyers are being distributed by interested community members and are available at libraries, community centers and public counters throughout the city. Additional information is available at www.anaheim.net/districts, including mapping instructions, FAQs and a meeting calendar — translatable into different languages.
Additional community outreach will be conducted throughout the summer.
The outreach campaign is part of a historic milestone in Anaheim’s election process. During the City’s 150-year history, residents have elected Council Members from across the city. Starting in 2016, each of six newly drawn districts will elect its own City Council Member who must reside within that district.
